Where to go Spearfishing in Barcelona

When we first started Spearfishing in Barcelona it was a bit of a struggle to find places to go. This made it difficult to get better and find better fish. We want to share some basic spots that everyone knows about to hopefully keep you safe and growing.

Selva de Mar

Beginner

This was the first place we started Spearfishing in Barcelona. The three of us had a suitcase full of gear that we would lug from the L4 metro stop all the way down the jetty. What was alluring about this location was the shallow water and easy access. You get into the water from the jetty, and it is well protected from swell.

The only people that make it down this jetty are fishermen and horny teenagers. For that reason, it is a fairly secure place to leave extra gear. As often as we went to this place, we never had anyone steal any gear from us. That is not a guarantee, but it should give a little confidence. We typically just stashed our clothes in the rocks.

While this place was a great start, we outgrew it quickly. We eventually wanted more area to explore with cleaner, deeper water.

The good
  • Very easy to get in and get out
  • Less waves and choppiness on the inside area
  • In a quieter location
  • Shallow
The bad
  • Long walk from the metro
  • The inside area can be muddy
  • Shallow

The W

Intermediate

Once we started making friends with a local spearo, this was the first place he suggested to us. Stepping up from Selva de Mar, this place was great. It had a submerged man-made reef that stretched out into the sea with plenty of fish on either side of it.

Because the reef is pretty shallow and long, it can sometimes offer a little protection from the swell depending on the direction it is coming from. Like most of the Spearfishing in Barcelona you will want to be aware of the direction the swell is coming from because it greatly impact water clarity.

The frustrations we have had with this spot are the general location. It is off the busiest beach next to a strip of restaurants, bars, and a hotel. During most of the year, there is a bar that is operated by the W that sets up inside a trailer directly in front of the entry point. The bar staff can be very disgruntled when you try to walk by their space with your fishing gear. We have also had many things stolen from us despite burying them deep in the rocks.

We still visit this spot from time to time but are very methodical with what we bring and how we get there. We only bring what will go in the water with us. This means we change into our suits before we arrive. Bicing (SMOU) is typically completely full so we either take a bus or another bike service that does not rely on an available spot to dock the bike like Bolt or RideMovi.

The good
  • Easy entry point with minimal swimming
  • The manmade reef brings in a lot of fish
  • The reef is shallow in the middle and makes it easy to swim out
The bad
  • Boat traffic can be bad
  • This is the busiest beach in Barcelona
  • Not many convenient ways to get here

Port Olimpic

Intermediate

This spot is much better when accessed by boat, but we originally started going from the beach. When you get to the beach, you will see the back side of the port wall has steps that you can walk down. This will save you a significant swim and give you an easy point to get ready. Once you get in, be careful when crossing the sailboat entrance for the boat club. When you get past that, the easiest way to find the reef is to hug the port wall and swim straight out from there. It will be all sand until you get to the reef.

It is not too difficult to get here and since the port wall where you get in is not in a trafficked area, you can worry less about people stealing your stuff if you leave anything behind. It is also great to grab a snack from Burger King after a long session.

One other thing to mention is that the legality of fishing here is ambiguous. Technically there should be no issues with it, but I have heard stories of people being asked to leave. Be aware of this and know that you enter at your own risk.

The good
  • Consistently a lot of fish
  • Large area to explore
  • Varying depth
  • Less boat traffic because of the warning buoys
The bad
  • Long swim from the beach
